It is Heart Health Month 2019! What better way to celebrate your heart than to talk about some ways you can keep it healthy! The heart is such an important muscle, so maintaining its functionality is something you definitely want to keep in mind. Below we are going to cover some helpful tips for keeping a healthy heart.

Manage Your Blood Pressure Rates

High blood pressure is referred to by the American Heart Association as a silent killer¹. It “is the single biggest risk factor for heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular problems. If it’s left untreated it could lead to heart attack, heart disease, congestive heart failure, atherosclerosis (fatty buildup in the arteries that causes them to harden), stroke, kidney damage, vision loss, erectile dysfunction, memory loss, fluid in the lungs, chest pain or discomfort and peripheral artery disease.” ²

The best way to manage your blood pressure rates is to get them checked regularly. You can get your blood pressure checked at your doctor’s office, a medical clinic, and there are even machines you can buy to keep at home.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight is an important healthy heart tip for any living organism. Your weight can become a large factor in your overall health, especially when talking about the health of your heart. The more weight you carry, the harder your heart has to work to function. A healthy weight is based off of many factors and won’t be the same for everyone. It is best to sit down with your doctor and find out what a healthy weight range is for your body.

Be Active

There are many ways to stay active in your daily life! The best healthy heart tip here is to keep your body moving! Things as simple as walking to your mailbox instead of driving up to it, or carrying your groceries one bag at a time into your home (if you are really up for the challenge). Little things like this can really help to keep your body active. Other healthy options for staying active are things like, enrolling in a dance class, taking a walk, or maybe just adding in a couple of sit-ups before bed! There are lots of fun and healthy options out there! You just have to find what works best for you and your lifestyle!

Be Smoke-Free

Smoking is one of the leading causes of many health problems. Smoking can have a very significant and negative impact on the heart as well. When you smoke, you are compromising the vessels that supply blood to the main arteries in your body³. If you aren’t a smoker, keep it that way! If you do smoke, you may want to talk to your doctor to find out your options for trying to quit.

Learn CPR-as a valuable skill set to help others who may be suffering from a medical heart emergency

Knowing CPR in an emergency situation could mean the difference between life and death. CPR stands for cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. Taking the time to learn CPR is a valuable skillset to help others who may be suffering from a medical heart emergency. Getting your CPR certification could mean more than just becoming a lifeguard. It can mean that you are taking the proper steps to be prepared and of aide in a number of emergency, cardiac related situations.
