10 Reasons to Choose Dorsey Culinary Academy

We’re Accredited by ACF

The Culinary Arts program at Dorsey Schools is programmatically accredited by The Accrediting Commission of the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation (ACFEF).  Accreditation is a seal of quality.  In addition, the ACF is a well-known organization in the Culinary world.  Because of those reasons, attending a program accredited by The Accrediting Commission of the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation (ACFEF) can be beneficial to a future Culinarian.

Students have the Opportunity to become Certified

Students in our Culinary Arts program have the opportunity to challenge the ServSafe certification test as well as the NRAEF Nutrition certification test. In addition, each graduate of the Culinary Arts program at Dorsey Schools is eligible to become an ACF certified culinarian with documentation of both membership in the ACF and one year of in-field working experience.  Certifications are “tools” if you will that can help make you a more desirable candidate to potential employers.

Designed to be Finished in Just One Year

The Dorsey Schools Culinary Arts program is designed to be completed in just one year.  This allows our students to get in and get the training they need and get into the field faster. In longer programs, students may take more time to enter the field.

Taught by Expert Faculty

Our instructors are caring individuals.  They possess experience, expertise, and noteworthy credentials in their field. Each of them are very passionate about what they do. Our instructors meet the criteria set by the State of Michigan.  Our Chef instructors also meet the rigorous guidelines set forth by the ACFEF (American Culinary Federation Educational Foundation). In addition to our Chefs being highly skilled instructors with impressive backgrounds, they also continue to play a role in the industry, participating in various cooking competitions such as the Culinary World Cup and Culinary Olympics. Several of them have also earned various medals through the ACF!

Participate in Extracurricular Activities

Dorsey Culinary Academy provides students with the opportunity to practice and hone the skills learned in class, even when not in the classroom.  This can give students deeper knowledge and real world experience. This experience can be gained through our Culinary Academy’s fully licensed catering program.  The catering program’s mission is to educate students with “live” events, to serve the public great food from scratch, and to provide excellent service. Practical training may include providing culinary goods and services that may be sold to the public.

Students also complete an externship, for added experience.

Some additional events that Dorsey students and instructors participate in include Burger Bash, Uncorked, Farm to Table, and many more. These events allow students to interact with the community, network with others in the industry, and gain real world experience with valuable resume’ builders.

Built in Externship

As previously mentioned, Students within the Culinary Arts program participate in an externship. This happens during the last module of training.  The primary objective of externship is to ensure that each student gains practical experience, knowledge, skills and insight into the food service occupation. It is a structured experience bringing together academic knowledge gained in the instructional kitchen and classroom with practical hands-on participation in various cooking tasks.

Hands-On Training

The Culinary Arts program here at Dorsey Schools stresses the idea that students learn best through doing. Because of this, students in the program are exposed to a variety of real world culinary settings such as catering events and their externships, as well as classroom instruction. Due to this blended approach, students who graduate from our culinary program can be especially well rounded and suited to enter the professional workforce.

Specially Designed Curriculum

The Culinary Arts program at Dorsey Schools has been designed to expose students to the knowledge and skills needed to enter the culinary arts workforce. Because of our specially designed curriculum, students won’t be forced to waste their time with information and courses that aren’t needed. Instead, our students just focus on what they’re coming here for – Culinary Arts.

Books and Supplies are Included in Tuition

In addition to a program instruction, tuition includes books and required supplies.  This includes two chef coats, two pairs of chef pants, a hat, an apron and a kitchen knife toolkit. Dorsey Schools will also pay the cost one time for students in this program who meet exam preparation requirements to challenge two certification exams:  ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification and NRAEF Nutrition certification.

Career Services Assistance is Available

No school can guarantee employment following graduation.  At Dorsey Schools, we do all that we can to help our students, following graduation from our programs (and beyond). We provide employment assistance to all program completers at no additional cost. Some of these services may include resume writing assistance, interview tips, and ongoing guidance and support.
