What’s the difference between a Cosmetologist and an Esthetician?

A cosmetologist is someone who has went to school to study the application of various beauty treatments for hair, nails, and skin. Many cosmetology programs will focus primarily on cutting and styling hair while providing students with a basic foundation in other skills such as nail care, skincare, and make-up application.

An Esthetician is someone who has specifically went to school to study and train in treatments to care for and beautify the skin.

In the State of Michigan, these two occupations carry separate (and different) licensure requirements, so as you are considering your career in the beauty industry, it is important to determine which path may be best for you.
