An Esthetician, once licensed, may perform a variety of duties.  Some of these may include:

  • Assess and evaluate the condition and appearance of a clients’ skin.
  • Cleanse a client’s skin, oftentimes using water, lotion, or creams.
  • Demonstrate to clients how they can properly care for the skin and provide recommendations on skincare.
  • Select and apply cosmetic products and advise clients of makeup types and application.
  • Provide skin treatments such as facials, masks, and peels to clients.
  • Remove body hair.
  • Provide facial massages.
  • Keep records of client services, needs, and preferences.
  • Sterilize equipment and maintain a clean and tidy work area.

How long does it take to become an Esthetician?

It’s always best to research the licensure process for the state in which you’re interested in working.  Requirements may vary state to state.  In the State of Michigan, in order to become a licensed Esthetician, one has to complete no less than 400 hours of training either in a licensed school of cosmetology or as an apprentice for not less than 6 months in a licensed cosmetology establishment where skin services are rendered. Once a candidate has completed their training, they must take and pass a practical and theory exam.
